Rights defenders ask ECtHR to ban extradition of Ingush woman who fled domestic violence

The Vanadzor office of the Helsinki Civic Assembly has filed a petition with the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), demanding a ban on the extradition from Armenia to Russia of Fatima Zurabova, a native of Ingushetia, who fled domestic violence.

In Armenia, law enforcers detained Zurabova, after which human rights defenders reported that a relative who came to pick up the woman threatened her with prison for escaping.

Fatima Zurabova is still in the police station, said Arthur Sakunts, the head of the Vanadzor office of the Helsinki Civic Assembly.

Ara Gazaryan, a lawyer, has explained that if there are signs of danger in a criminal case, the ECtHR is entitled to stop extradition. The defence can appeal to the ECtHR requesting to suspend the extradition procedure should there be any discrimination risk.

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer. The amount is ridiculous and should be appealed against, lawyers and human rights defenders have stated.
