Verdict in case of torture at Makhachkala SIZO upheld

The Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan has upheld the verdict passed in the case of torture and extortion against Daud Davydov, a former head of the Makhachkala SIZO (pre-trial prison), and his subordinates. This was reported by Zarema Mamaeva, the head of the Dagestani SC's press service.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 7, 2023, the court sentenced Daud Davydov to eight years in penal colony; two of his subordinates were sentenced to 5.5 years in jail each within the case of beating detainees and extorting money and property in the amount of nine million roubles. The defendants refused to plead guilty. In the spring of 2022, Magomed Saliev, a SIZO inspector, whom the court found guilty of exceeding his authority and receiving a large bribe, was sentenced to 3.5 years in penal colony. Saliev fully admitted his guilt. Dagestani journalists treated the sentence against Davydov and his subordinates as unique.

According to the prosecution, from December 2015 to June 2019, the above law enforcers repeatedly used physical violence against one of the detainees and forced him to re-register the ownership of a land plot, buildings and an apartment in the total amount of more than five million roubles. They also received a bribe of 150,000 roubles from the detainee's wife; 300,000 roubles from a local resident for improving his father's custody conditions; and in February 2019, they stole 3.2 million roubles from another detainee.
