Picket in support of Gadjiev disrupted by police search at journalist Yusupov’s house

A weekly picket in support of Dagestani journalist Abdulmumin Gadjiev did not take place, as the protest posters were stored at Idris Yusupov’s house, searched by the police in connection with the riots at an airport in Makhachkala. The protest actions will continue as before, reports Magomed Magomedov, a deputy editor-in-chief of the Dagestani weekly newspaper “Chernovik” (Rough Draft).

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that colleagues of Abdulmumin Gadjiev consider his criminal case to be political persecution and hold pickets in his support every week.

In Makhachkala, the police came to search the house of Idris Yusupov, a journalist of the “Novoye Delo” (New Clause) publication. Law enforcers seized a computer, flash drives, and other office equipment and obliged the journalist to appear at a police station for questioning as a witness in a case on mass unrest at the Makhachkala airport. Idris Yusupov reported that investigators asked him about his possible connection with a Telegram channel that called for participation in anti-Semitic actions.

The picket in support of Abdulmumin Gadjiev did not take place due to the search at the house of Idris Yusupov, reported Magomed Magomedov, the deputy editor-in-chief of the “Chernovik”. “The posters that we use at our pickets were kept by Idris, so we physically did not have access to them,” explained Magomed Magomedov. The protestors were short of time to make new posters.

Abdulmumin Gadjiev, an editor of the Dagestani weekly newspaper “Chernovik” (Rough Draft), Abubakar Rizvanov, the head of the “Ansar” charitable foundation, and Kemal Tambiev have been arrested since June 2019 on the charges of financing terrorism. On September 12, the court sentenced Abdulmumin Gadjiev to 17 years, Abubakar Rizvanov – to 18 years, and Kemal Tambiev – to 17.5 years of imprisonment.
