Makhachkala resident sentenced for participating in “Union of Rus’ Slavic Forces”*

A court sentenced Makhmud Ibadulaev, a resident of Makhachkala, to two years and two months of imprisonment, recognizing him as an active participant of the extremist organization “Union of Rus’ Slavic Forces”*.

According to the court, in the period from October 2019 to March 2022, Makhmud Ibadulaev participated in the activities of the organization “Union of Rus’ Slavic Forces”*, including calling for refusal to pay taxes and fees for housing and communal services, as well as refusal to fulfil civil obligations, the “OVD-Info”** human rights project reports. Furthermore, according to the investigators’ version, the man produced and sent out propaganda materials “promoting hatred of government agencies.”

The “Caucasian Knot” has also reported that several members of the “Citizens of the USSR”* movement were detained in Cherkessk in September. According to the law enforcers’ information, the detainees were convincing citizens not to pay for utilities and to obtain a temporary “USSR” passport.

People who consider themselves citizens of the USSR are an informal community, and they unite in various organizations, reports human rights defenders Alexander Verkhovsky. According to him, several organizations of those who consider themselves citizens of the USSR have already been banned in Russia, but the abbreviation of USSR is not always present in the titles of those banned organizations.

*In August 2019, the Supreme Court (SC) of the Komi Republic recognized the interregional public association “Union of Rus’ Slavic Forces” (one of the group of movements that also includes “Citizens of the USSR”) as an extremist organization.

**Included by the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) into the register of foreign agents.
