Verdicts to Ingush activists upheld

The appellate instance of the Stavropol Territory has upheld the verdicts passed to seven Ingush protest leaders for their actions during the rally in Magas; they were convicted within the case of creating an extremist community. This was announced by the "Memorial" Centre for Human Rights Defence in its Telegram channel.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that since January 13, 2023, in the Stavropol Territory, the court of appeal has been considering appeal complaints lodged against the verdicts passed to seven Ingush protest leaders. The prosecutor has treated the verdicts as duly justified and ignored all the questions asked by the defendants and their advocates. The activists have pointed out that the first-instance court had failed to take into account many facts testifying to the defendants' innocence. At the rally in Magas, the activists tried to prevent riots, not to provoke them, Akhmed Barakhoev, one of the activists, has stated.

The Ingush activists were accused of creating an extremist community and participating therein. In December 2021, the court sentenced Akhmed Barakhoev, Musa Malsagov and Malsag Uzhakhov to nine years in prison each, Ismail Nalgiev, Bagaudin Khautiev and Barakh Chemurziev – to eight years each, and Zarifa Sautieva – to 7.5 years in colony.
