Speech of Dagestani journalist Gadjiev in court increases interest in his case

After his speech in debates at the trial, the case of Adbulmumin Gadjiev, a Dagestani journalist, has returned into the information agenda. The solo picket held in Makhachkala with a demand to release Gadjiev has received active support, Magomed Magomedov, a deputy editor-in-chief of the "Chernovik" portal, has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that colleagues of Abdulmumin Gadjiev, the arrested journalist of the "Chernovik", treat his criminal case as political persecution and regularly hold solo pickets in Makhachkala in his support.

Journalists believe that Gadjiev is persecuted because the "Chernovik" is used to voice out "uncomfortable questions" to authorities and law enforcers.

On July 10, Idris Yusupov, a journalist, held a solo picket demanding "Freedom for political prisoners." The second picket demanding "Freedom for Abdulmumin Gadjiev" was held by Magomed Magomedov, a deputy editor-in-chief of the "Chernovik".

The support for the picket demanding an end to Gadjiev's persecution by car drivers was unusually high, Magomed Magomedov has informed.

"According to my estimates, more than twenty car drivers honked and showed signs of greeting ... During these four years, probably, only in the first days there was such unprecedented support," Idris Yusupov has noted. He recalled that judicial debates are now underway at the trial, and Gadjiev's speech has become one of the reasons for the increase in interest in his case.

On July 6, at the trial held at the Southern District Military Court, Gadjiev stated that the prosecution had failed to provide any real proof that the defendants had known each other, got united into a group and financed terrorist organizations.

Mr Magomedov said that one of the tourists asked him if they were not afraid to go out to pickets. The picketers have fears for their safety, but throughout the four years now, they have been holding their solo pickets held in support of their colleague and with various other demands, Magomed Magomedov has replied.

On June 22, 2023, the state prosecutor demanded that the defendants, Abdulmumin Gadjiev, Abubakar Rizvanov and Kemal Tambiev, be sentenced to 19 years in prison each.
