Nemov stays in severe condition after being beaten in Chechnya, his colleagues say

Advocate Alexander Nemov, who was injured in an attack in Chechnya on him and journalist Elena Milashina, is not able to walk, his colleagues report.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on July 4, Elena Milashina, a journalist of the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta”, and Alexander Nemov, an advocate of Zarema Musaeva, were beaten in Chechnya.

Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya, promised to “investigate the incident,” Chechen Ombudsperson Mansur Soltaev called the attack a provocation, and Akhmed Dudaev, the Chechen Minister of Press, pointed out that “the style of Western intelligence services” could be traced in the attack. Human rights defenders associate the attack with Elena Milashina’s publications about human rights violations in Chechnya.

Alexander Nemov was taken to the hospital on a stretcher, reported Ekaterina Khudova, the chair of the Union of Young Lawyers of Russia. “He is in severe condition, he is unable to walk,” said Ekaterina Khudova as quoted by the Russian Federal Chamber of Lawyers on its official website.

Elena Milashina has got no broken fingers, but she has severe bruises, and doctors initially made an erroneous diagnosis, the Human Rights Protection Centre “Memorial” reports on its website.

Film director Alexander Sokurov has condemned the attack on Elena Milashina. He has emphasized that the brutal beating of the woman has not evoked any reaction in Chechnya and among members of the Muslim community.
