Sentence approved for Dagestani blogger Askhabali Alibekov in case on discrediting Russian army

The Krasnodar Territorial Court upheld a verdict to Askhabali Alibekov, a native of Dagestan, an author of the “Wild Paratrooper” YouTube channel, who was sentenced for a year and two months of imprisonment.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on March 23, Askhabali Alibekov was sentenced to a year and two months of imprisonment, as the court recognized that the video on his YouTube channel discredited the Russian Armed Forces. An Askhabali Alibekov’s wife said that he complained about being beaten in a SIZO (pre-trial prison).

The court approved the verdict in the case on repeated discrediting of the Russian Armed Forces to Askhabali Alibekov, upholding imprisonment for a year and two months in a high-security penal colony, reported advocate Marina Dubrovina as quoted by the “OVD-Info”* human rights project.

Askhabali Alibekov was detained in Novorossiysk on September 9, 2022. In May of the same year, he was found guilty under the administrative article on discrediting the Russian Armed Forces. Another protocol under the article on discrediting the Russian Armed Forces against Askhabali Alibekov was received by court on June 8 after the blogger posted on the Internet a video with a pacifist appeal.

The “Wild Paratrooper” YouTube channel posted videos criticizing Vladimir Putin and the actions of the Russian authorities, as well as videos about the persecution of the blogger himself.

On November 2, 2022, the “Support for Political Prisoners. Memorial” human rights project recognized Askhabali Alibekov as a political prisoner and demanded to stop his criminal prosecution.
