ECtHR recognizes violation of Astrakhan activist Tyurin's rights

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in Strasbourg has awarded Alexei Tyurin, an Astrakhan activist, a compensation for his persecution after a rally in support of political prisoners.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 30, 2017, in Astrakhan, activists commemorated the victims of political repressions with a minute of silence and remembered the current political prisoners. On November 30 that year, the court found Alexei Tyurin, who took part in the rally, guilty of violating the procedure for holding public events, and fined him.

The ECtHR has found that Russian authorities had violated Alexei Tyurin's rights by persecuting him in 2017-2018 for taking part in the rally in support of political prisoners, the "Kavkaz.Realii"* project has reported.

Alexei Tyurin had complained about the disproportionate measures he was subjected to for his participation in the action. The ECtHR has found a violation of his right to the freedom of peaceful assembly, declaring Tyurin's detention unlawful and the trial of his case unfair.

Alexei Tyurin was awarded compensation of 3500 euros; it follows from the decision posted in the website of the ECtHR.

The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported that in April 2020, Tyurin was fined for insulting President Vladimir Putin in a social network. The activist linked this persecution to his picket against the constitutional reform.

In July of the same year, the court sentenced Tyurin to 1.5 years of freedom deprivation for calls to extremism. Since November 2020, he served his term in a colony. In January 2022, his advocate reported that he had been subjected to pressure at the colony; he was several times unreasonably placed into the dungeon (punishment cell).
