Human rights defender Igor Nagavkin sentenced to six years of imprisonment

In the Volgograd Region, a court found human rights defender Igor Nagavkin guilty of stealing jewellery and sentenced him to six years of imprisonment.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that witnesses for the defence in the Igor Nagavkin’s case stated that the human rights defender had an alibi. He himself associated the criminal proceedings against him with his human rights activities.

In 2016, Igor Nagavkin, an expert of the all-Russian movement “For Human Rights” in the Southern Federal District (SFD), was arrested in a case on the theft of jewellery from a pawnshop. In November 2018, Igor Nagavkin was released and again engaged in human rights activities, but the criminal case against him was not closed. In March 2021, the prosecutor’s office returned the case for additional investigation because of the identified violations. In June 2021, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) recognized the arrest of Igor Nagavkin and his prolonged detention unlawful.

The Bykovsky District Court sentenced Igor Nagavkin and other defendants in the case to six years of imprisonment in a penal colony. Advocate Ilya Govorukhin announced the intention to file an appeal against the court’s decision.

“The verdict is unlawful and unfounded. We repeatedly reported violations during the trial,” the advocate stated.

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer. The amount is ridiculous and should be appealed against, lawyers and human rights defenders have stated.
