Leyla Gireeva, who ran away from domestic violence, returns to her family in Ingushetia

Leyla Gireeva, an 18-year-old resident of Nazran, who ran away from home, has returned to her family and wants to settle her conflict with family members. The girl is under the recognizance not to leave, human rights defenders have informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Leyla had asked to protect her from her relatives, who, according to her version, could cripple or kill her.

In Nazran, Gireeva was subjected to domestic violence and the "expulsion of jinn", which prompted her to run away from home on November 14, 2022, said Svetlana Anokhina, a Dagestani journalist and human rights defender. After her escape, relatives accused Leyla of a theft in order to put her on the wanted list.

A number of Telegram channels have reported that Leyla Gireeva was returned to her relatives in Ingushetia.

"She decided to return to Ingushetia, as she realized that the seriousness of her conflict with relatives and the initiated criminal case would not let her live in peace. The girl wants to personally eliminate misunderstandings with her family," the SK SOS Crisis Group has explained.

In the house of Leyla Gireeva's parents, there was always a normal situation; her relatives took care of the girl and treated her; she committed her act under the influence of outsiders, her sister Khava Gireeva said earlier.

  • Law enforcers' provocations put gays in Dagestan under additional threat

Gays in Dagestan were in danger even before law enforcers held provocations and raids on them; and after the arrest of the gay blogger Matvei Volodin, threats have grown manifold. However, as noted by rights defenders, law enforcers have no real grounds to open cases against gays under the article on extremism.
