Resident of Nalchik challenges South Korea's refusal to grant asylum

The South Korean Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has denied asylum to Djashar Khubiev, a football player from the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR), who had left Russia due to the threat of being sent to the special military operation (SMO) in Ukraine. Khubiev has appealed the denial and is staying at the airport with four other Russians pending a decision.

Djashar Khubiev, a resident of Nalchik, and four other Russians who fled from the mobilization asked for asylum in South Korea. Having received a refusal, they appealed against it and are staying at the Seoul Airport for several months already, the "Baza" Telegram channel reports.

According to Khubiev, he should not have been called up to participate in the SMO in Ukraine.

"Under the Russian law, they should not draft me into the army. But last November, militaries came to my place and forced me to sign a document stating that I would be considered a deserter if I failed to appear for military service in a few days," "The Korea Times" newspaper writes.

The Korean MoJ has stated that evasion from military service is not a valid reason for obtaining asylum. If the court rules against them, the asylum seekers are likely to be deported to their home country.
