Dagestani lawyer succeeds in seeking apology for his detention near picket
A court obliged a policeman from Makhachkala to issue a written apology to lawyer Marat Ismailov, who was detained while passing by a solo picket held in support of journalist Abdulmumin Gadjiev.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that colleagues of Abdulmumin Gadjiev, an editor of the weekly newspaper “Chernovik” (Rough Draft), regularly hold pickets in Makhachkala in support of him. On January 24, the police detained Magdy Kamalov, the founder of the newspaper “Chernovik”, who was holding such a picket. Together with him, the policemen detained lawyer Marat Ismailov, who was going to the Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan for attending a trial and was passing by the solo picket.
Marat Ismailov stopped to greet the picketer, but did not even shake his hand in order not to violate the rules for holding pickets. However, the policemen insisted that Marat Ismailov must go with them to the police station.
A court in Kaspiysk ordered Yakub Karakhanov, an inspector of the police department for the Soviet District of Makhachkala, to apologize in writing to Marat Ismailov for his illegal detention, the “Kavkaz.Realii”* reports.
Earlier, the court had recognized the actions of the policeman as illegal, but the policeman did not apologize to Marat Ismailov, as required by the Law “On Police”.
