Dagestan girls transported to safe place

Patimat Magomedova, Khadizhat and Patimat Khizrievas and Aminat Gazimagomedova from Dagestan, who ran away from home and accused their relatives of violence, have been taken to a safe place in Georgia, human rights defenders have informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Russian border guards refused to let the four girls from Dagestan who had escaped from domestic violence to pass through the "Verkhniy Lars" checkpoint and kept them until their relatives arrived. The girls stated that they had been beaten up at home, forbidden to receive education and forced to marry. They asked not to return them to their families and complained about the threats. On October 30, they, together with their advocate, were allowed into the neutral territory; then Georgian border guards let them into the country.

The Telegram channel of the SK SOS Crisis Group has noted that this case is "quite indicative." "In Northern Caucasus, human rights violations can occur for a variety of reasons: because of one's unwillingness to get married; because of rumours, one's religious or political viewpoints; because of the hatred of one's sexual orientation and gender identity," the Group has written.
