Ingush resident sentenced to long term of imprisonment in case attracting attention of human rights defenders
The Supreme Court (SC) of North Ossetia sentenced Ibragim Mankiev, a resident of Ingushetia, to 14 years of imprisonment, finding him guilty of acts of banditry, murders, and illegal possession of weapons. Human rights defenders drew their attention to the persecution of Ibragim Mankiev after the reports about his kidnapping and torture in Egypt.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in November 2009, a brother of Ibragim Mankiev filed a complained about his kidnapping in Alexandria in Egypt. In December of the same year, a spouse of Ibragim Mankiev asked Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili to protect her husband. According to Ibragim Mankiev’s wife, her husband was persecuted due to the fact that he was an imam in a mosque in North Ossetia.
According to the investigators’ version, in the period from May 2005 to October 2006, Ibragim Mankiev led the Nazran grouping of militants involved in murders of police officers. Fearing criminal prosecution, Ibragim Mankiev secretly left for Egypt in October 2006, after which he was put on the international wanted list, and on January 21, 2022, he was detained in Nazran.
Let us remind you that on December 10, 2009, the human rights organization “Amnesty International” (AI) announced that Russia had made a request for the extradition of Ibragim Mankiev from Egypt. Egyptian human rights defenders claimed that Ibragim Mankiev was subjected to torture.
