380 former hostages and their relatives oppose museum in Beslan School No. 1

Until the inquiry into the terror act committed at the Beslan school is completed, the building must be mothballed; this is the opinion of Emma Tagaeva from the "Voice of Beslan" and 380 victims who have signed the call not to create a museum at the venue of people's deaths. In their turn, Agunda Vataeva and Batraz Misikov, former hostages, believe that it will no longer be possible to find new evidence in the school, while the museum can help preserve the school building and the memory of the dead.

On September 1, 2004, terrorists took 1128 hostages at School No. 1 in Beslan. The terror act killed 334 people, including 186 children.

According to Emma Tagaeva, among those who oppose the museum are the classmates of her perished sons, who said that after the tragedy at the school, it hurt them to see any changes there.

The victims have the right to demand the conservation of the school while the investigation continues, Ms Tagaeva has stressed.

For many years already, terror act victims have been seeking the adoption of a law that would define the duty of the state to help them.

Agunda Vataeva, a former hostage, said that at first she disliked the idea of the museum, but she changed her mind after meeting with the "Beslan Mothers".

"What is especially valuable to me, as a pupil of this school, is that they strive to preserve the memory of the school itself: its history, employees and the building itself," she said.

Ms Vataeva has stressed that she no longer hopes for a fair investigation.

All important evidence has been destroyed a long time ago, Batraz Misikov, a former hostage, has also pointed out.
