Dagestani representative in Tyumen supports school's refusal to cancel ban on wearing hijabs

The school management in the city Tyumen would not change the internal regulations after a scandal with a Dagestan schoolgirl, who was not allowed to attend classes in a hijab.

On September 2, the parents of a fifth-grader in one of Tyumen schools stated that the principal refused to let their daughter come to class in a hijab. The tearful girl was able to get to lessons only after her parents' verbal skirmish with the principal. The girl's father, Ibragim Davudov, met Alexei Ryder, a Deputy Governor of the Tyumen Region, the principal and a representative of the Dagestani Diaspora. After the meeting, they came to the conclusion that schoolgirls may go to classes in hijabs, if they warn the principal in advance.

After the scandal with the schoolgirl, the school managers refused to change the internal regulations, said Elena Korchemkina, the chair of the school board.

This decision was supported by Yaragi Kurbanov, the Dagestani representative in the Tyumen Region. He has pointed out that the school is a secular educational institution.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that female students of the Astrakhan Medical University had complained about the ban on attending classes in hijabs. The head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, obliged Magomed Daudov, the Speaker of the Chechen Parliament, to take the issue under his personal control.

In some schools of Dagestan, the schoolgirls' rights are violated by the demand to wear headscarves, while in others, on the contrary, they forbid to wear hijabs, Svetlana Anokhina, a journalist, and Maryam Alieva, a blogger, have pointed out. Lawyers have noted that a ban on wearing headscarves (hijabs) as a religious attribute violates the freedom of religion.
