Chechen native Zelimkhan Mazaev accused of organizing a militant grouping
Zelimkhan Mazaev, a native of Chechnya, who was convicted of robbery and was suspected of organizing the murder of Sulim Yamadaev, the former commander of the “Vostok” battalion, was arrested on the charge of organizing an illegal armed formation (IAF). The court of appeal did not grant the request of the defence to transfer Zelimkhan Mazaev to house arrest.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on January 9, 2017, it became known that in Moscow, a court found Zelimkhan Mazaev, a native of Chechnya, guilty of robbery and sentenced him to six years of imprisonment, and three other defendants – to five years of imprisonment.
In February 2015, Zelimkhan Mazaev and three of his alleged accomplices were detained in Moscow on suspicion of an attack on two men. According to the investigators’ version, the men were beaten and robbed, being threatened with an object that looked like a pistol.
Let us remind you that in 2009, Zelimkhan Mazaev became one of the suspects in the case on the murder of Sulim Yamadaev, the former commander of the “Vostok” battalion, who was shot dead in Dubai.
Besides, in the UAE, Iranian Makhdi Lorniya, the former groom of the leader of Chechnya, and businessman Maksudjon Ismatov, a citizen of Tajikistan, were accused of murdering Sulim Yamadaev. On April 12, 2010, in Dubai, a court sentenced them to life imprisonment. The defendants pleaded not guilty. In July 2011, they were released and deported from the UAE.
