Rustavi protesters demand authorities' reaction to prisoners' hunger strike
At the Rustavi Prison, inmates are on hunger strike in protest against denial of medical care and ban on relatives' visits. This was stated by their relatives at the protest action, demanding to improve the inmates' custody conditions.
According to the protesters, the hunger-strikers have limited access to medical care; and visits and phone calls to them are prohibited.
In their turn, officials of the Penitentiary Service have refuted the information about the prisoners' hunger strike. However, the protesters threatened to continue their action at the building of the Ministry of Justice if their demands were not met.
The wife of one of the prisoners said that they insist on a doctor's visit and demand that they be provided with high-quality medical services, but the prison administration refuses to do it, the "Gazeta Batumelebi" outlet writes on its "netgazeti.ge" website.
According to the "Pirveli" TV Channel, on August 14, about 10 prisoners were hunger-striking in the Rustavi Prison, but the Penitentiary Service has confirmed that only three were on hunger strike.
