Rights defenders find housing in Romania for Chechen woman

Volunteers have helped find an apartment in Romania for Amina Gerikhanova, a native of Chechnya, who, after being released from custody, should await a decision on her extradition to Russia. This was reported by the "Vayfond" Chechen human rights association.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 16, the Sweden-based "Vayfond" called on volunteers to help in finding housing for Gerikhanova.

Amina Gerikhanova, 36, was detained along with her son on March 13 at the Romanian border while trying to leave Ukraine, where she had lived after leaving Chechnya about five years ago. Gerikhanova was arrested; and her son was placed in an orphanage, from where he was later taken by a relative. The Interpol is searching for Gerikhanova at the request of Russia, where she is accused of participating in the war in Syria.

Gerikhanova will not be able to leave Romania as its authorities still want to extradite her to Russia, the "Vayfond" has reported.

On August 6, it became known that members of the Chechen Diaspora held a protest action at the Romanian consulate in Edinburgh, urging the European Union (EU) not to extradite Gerikhanova to Russia.
