Spouse of Azerbaijani oppositionist Gumbatov announces her husband’s hunger strike in prison
Agil Gumbatov, a member of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment, declared a hunger strike. Today, his spouse has held a protest action in front of the building of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) in Baku with the demand to reconsider the case of her husband and release him.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on November 15, 2021, a judge of the Baku Court on Grave Crimes sentenced Agil Gumbatov, a member of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), to 10 years of imprisonment in a case on hooliganism.
Today, Aigyun Gumbatova has come together with her son to a protest action in front of the building of the Azerbaijani MIA in Baku. According to the Agil Gumbatov’s wife, she is worried about her husband, who has been on his hunger strike for three or four days.
Aigyun Gumbatova was invited for a conversation at the Azerbaijani MIA. When entering the building, the woman noted that would be not her first conversation with representatives of the authorities, but previous conversations had brought no results. “I will always demand the release of my husband. What will happen to the children whose father is sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment?” the woman noted.
At the MIA building, officials recommended Aigyun Gumbatova to write an appeal, in which she stated her demands. The MIA’s officials said that her appeal would be considered in accordance with the law, Aigyun Gumbatova told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.
