Armenian villagers go out to protest against canal water pollution

Residents of the village of Djrashen, Ararat Region, have blocked the road in protest against water pollution in the canal flowing through the village. They treat the discharge of waste water from the pig farm as the source of pollution.

On July 31, several Djrashen villagers blocked the road leading from Nubarashen to the Ararat Region.

They told that a local businessman had opened a pig farm whose wastes are dumped into the canal, the "NEWS.am" has reported.

The protesters have complained about the poor quality of water used by residents of ten villages to water their vegetable gardens. According to their story, they have been trying to solve this problem for more than 20 years, and they no longer know who to turn to, the "shamshyan.com" portal reports.

The canal in question is several kilometres long; it was built back in Soviet years, the portal notes, adding some time later, protesters unblocked the road, but threatened to bring over 30 people to the next protest action, if authorities fail to solve the problem.
