President of Georgia pardons 11 prisoners
Salome Zurabishvili has released 10 prisoners from serving their sentences and reduced the sentence of another convict. There is one woman among those pardoned.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the President of Georgia usually dates her pardoning decrees to the country's memorable and festive dates. Thus, on April 23, Salome Zurabishvili signed a decree to pardon eight convicts on the occasion of the Easter.
Now, she has pardoned 11 convicts, the "InterPressNews" has reported with reference to the presidential administration.
Earlier, Nino Lomdjariya, the Georgian Ombudsperson, called on the President to pardon Nika Gvaramiya, the ex-head of the "Rustavi-2" TV Channel. She believes that the court's May 16 verdict to put him into jail for 3.5 years within an embezzlement case was unjustified. Mr Gvaramiya himself insists that his prosecution is political, as he fights for the Georgia's European perspective.
