Forty-eight protesters detained in Yerevan

The police violently dispersed a protest action near Victory Bridge in Yerevan, Ishkhan Sagatelyan, the deputy speaker of the Armenian parliament, reported. The police reported about 48 detainees, and according to the opposition, about 100 people were taken to police stations.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on May 5, the opposition held a march in Yerevan, calling on city residents to join the movement demanding the resignation of Nikol Pashinyan. The protesters announced large-scale actions, saying they intended to block the movement.

There was a clash between the activists and the police on the approaches to Victory Bridge. According to drivers and car passengers, the opposition “brought chaos to Yerevan, while it is not clear what they are trying to achieve.” The oppositionists objected that they would not allow damage to national interests of Armenia.

The police are using harsh and disproportionate force, Ishkhan Sagatelyan, the deputy speaker of the Armenian parliament, states.

Earlier, Ombudsperson Kristine Grigoryan has announced that the police are acting aggressively during detentions at protest actions in Armenia, and a number of activists have been injured.
