More than a hundred citizens of Ukraine request refugee status in Azerbaijan
The Azerbaijan’s authorities were addressed by 114 citizens of Ukraine, who left the country after the start of the special military operation by the Russian troops. The people who came from Ukraine applied for refugee status. Most of them settled in Azerbaijan with their relatives and friends and did not ask the country’s authorities for help with housing.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that according to the Azerbaijan’s State Migration Service, by April 9, since the beginning of the special military operation in Ukraine, 6163 citizens of the country arrived in Azerbaijan. Most of the people from Ukraine have settled with their relatives and friends, but they need food and psychological help. The refugees themselves complained that they could not get a job in Azerbaijan.
Two friends from Ukraine, who flew from Azerbaijan to Poland 10 days ago, explained that they flew to Baku with their young children as tourists even before the start of the special military operation. They lived in an apartment of a local resident, with whom they studied in Kiev.
The refugee status can only be issued to citizens of Ukraine who have declared the impossibility of living in the country for political reasons. Those who left the country in connection with the hostilities do not belong to the above category, excluding those who left the regions of Ukraine controlled by the Russian army, an official from the Azerbaijan’s State Migration Service explained.
The official notes that the number of those who have arrived in the country includes a lot of ethnic Azerbaijanis who permanently lived in Ukraine and who had to return to their historical homeland.
