Azerbaijani activist goes on hunger strike in a pre-trial detention cell

Activist Samir Ashurov, detained in Baku, denied the charge of attacking a man with a knife. He called his case falsified and went on a hunger strike in protest.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that Samir Ashurov was among 38 Azerbaijani citizens who returned from Germany on March 29 under an agreement on the readmission of persons living without permission. The man feared that he might be persecuted in Azerbaijan for his political activities. On April 19, Samir Ashurov was detained and suspected of attacking a man with a knife.

According to advocate Elchin Sadygov, Samir Ashurov claims that a knife was planted to him. The activist also complained that he was beaten by law enforcers. The man faces imprisonment for a term of six to 11 years.

Nurana Ashurova, a spouse of the activist, said that she was again not allowed to enter the hospital to visit the victim. “I wanted to find out why the incident arose ... to discuss the possibilities of reconciliation. But I am not allowed to visit him. All that strengthens my conviction that my husband was slandered,” the woman said.
