Journalists find a connection between poisoning of Navalny and murder of Nemtsov

According to the joint investigation released today by the “Bellingcat”*, “The Insider”*, and BBC, special service officers involved in the poisoning of Alexei Navalny followed Boris Nemtsov for several months, and natives of Chechnya were convicted for his murder.

Boris Nemtsov was shot dead in Moscow on February 27, 2015. On July 13, 2017, a court in Moscow found natives of Chechnya Zaur Dadaev, Anzor Gubashev, Shadid Gubashev, Tamerlan Eskerkhanov, and Khamzat Bakhaev guilty of murder and sentenced them to 11-20 years of imprisonment. No customers of the murder were identified.

According to the joint investigation by the “Bellingcat”*, “The Insider”*, and BBC, posted today on “The Insider”*, during the months before the Boris Nemtsov’s assassination, he was followed around the country by special service officers who later followed Alexei Navalny**. Authors of the investigation suggested that the same special service officers were involved in the poisoning of writer Dmitry Bykov in 2019, politician and journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza in 2015 and 2017, and Alexei Navalny** in 2020.

Publications referred to the data from the ticket booking database, analysed the information about the movement of Boris Nemtsov and found that from May 2014 to February 2015, three persons made 13 trips following the politician.

One of those three special service officers followed Alexei Navalny** around Russia 15 times before the poisoning of the oppositionist. The special service officer also followed Vladimir Kara-Murza and writer Dmitry Bykov, who were then poisoned. The second special service officer acted as a coordinator, and the third could be used to gain access to the Boris Nemtsov’s devices and listen in on his communications, the authors of the investigation suggested.

** Alexei Navalny is an organizer of FBK, an organization that is included by the Russian Ministry of Justice in the register of NCOs performing functions of a foreign agent. The organization was also recognized by the court as extremist and banned in Russia.
