Supporters of “International Memorial”* angered by its liquidation

Today, supporters of the “International Memorial”* have come to the building of the Supreme Court (SC) of Russia to support the organization, They considered the decision of the Court of Appeal to liquidate the NGO as a political order and pressure on civil society.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that today, the Board of Appeal of the Russia Supreme Court considered a complaint about the decision to liquidate the “International Memorial”*. The court has ruled to dismiss the appeal, and thus, the decision to liquidate the “International Memorial”* has come into force.

The people who have come today to the building of the Supreme Court (SC) of Russia to support the “International Memorial”* have considered the court’s decision to liquidate the NGO as pressure on civil society.

“The government obviously destroys everything that it cannot control. The ‘International Memorial’* is not a political, but a public body, and officials cannot control the brains, history, and the past. And since they are not able to control it, they want to close it,” the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent was told by Ivan Sergeevich, an employee of a construction company.

Lawyer Artyom Afanasiev, who also came to the building of the Russian Supreme Court, considered the liquidation groundless. “There are no grounds for the liquidation of the ‘International Memorial’*. What has the ‘International Memorial’* violated? Has it missed some labelling? Well, it has paid a fine for that! This is not a court, but a biased trial. However, I could not expect anything other. It is a clear political decision,” Artyom Afanasiev told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.

* The organization is included by the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) in the register of NCOs performing the functions of a foreign agent.
