Court in Chechnya refuses to release Magamadov and Isaev

The Chechen Supreme Court (SC) has left Salekh Magamadov and Ismail Isaev in custody until March 26.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 12, 2021, a preliminary hearing of the criminal case of the brothers Salekh Magamadov and Ismail Isaev was held at the Achkhoi-Martan District Court. The advocates filed a motion asking to transfer the consideration of the case to another region, because there's no hope for an objective case examination in Chechnya.

Brothers Salekh Magamadov and Ismail Isaev are accused of aiding and abetting a militant from a criminal group led by Aslan Byutukaev. The defendants reported that they had been forced to sign fabricated confessions. Investigators refused to investigate the brothers’ complaints about torture.

On January 6, the Chechen SC considered the motion against the extension of the brothers' custody.

In the complaint against the decision of the Achkhoi-Martan District Court of December 17, 2021, which extended the brothers' custody until March 26, 2022, the advocate noted that the above first-instance court had violated the procedure for holding the session and failed to comply with the established procedure for holding the hearing, says the SC's press release received on January 7 by the "Caucasian Knot".

"Despite all this, the Chechen SC has ruled to keep Magamadov and Isaev in custody at SIZO-1 (pre-trial prison) of Grozny until March 26; however, it satisfied the advocate's complaint and sent a petition about violations for revision to the first-instance court," the press release says.
