Former Georgia's General Staff head released in Germany

Giorgi Kalandadze, the former head of the Joint Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces who was detained in late December in Germany at the request of the Georgian authorities, has been set free.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 31, 2019, Giorgi Samushiya, a former employee of the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), accused in case of torture, was detained by the Interpol when he arrived in Ukraine from Spain. In Georgia, Samushiya was accused of unlawful imprisonment of Elberd Koberidze, whom he detained on July 28, 2012. In July 2019, Samushiya was extradited to his homeland. On December 19, 2021, the Georgian "Mtavari Arkhi" TV Company reported that Giorgi Kalandadze, a figurant in the same case, had been detained in Germany.

The "News-Georgia" has written today that General Giorgi Kalandadze, a former head of the General Staff of Georgia, who held this post under President Mikheil (Mikhail) Saakashvili and was detained in mid-December, has been released.

The release of Giorgi Kalandadze was reported by Eka Kherkheulidze, a member of the oppositional "United National Movement" (UNM) Party, in her Facebook page. "General Gigi Kalandadze has been released. The Georgian government, I feel sorry for you," she has written.
