Two Georgian residents arrested in South Ossetia

Two citizens of Georgia were arrested for two months on the charge of illegal border crossing and tobacco smuggling, the KGB of South Ossetia announced.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that Georgian citizens were often detained on the borderline between Georgia and South Ossetia. So, Mamuka Chkhikvadze, a resident of Georgia, was detained near the village of Zemo Nikozi at the border with South Ossetia. On December 12, the authorities of Georgia demanded to release the citizen, but on December 19, it was reported about his arrest.

On December 15, near the South-Ossetian village of Lopan in the Znaur District, border guards detained two citizens of Georgia: 50-year-old Zaza Megrelishvili and 48-year-old Tamaz Gogichashvili. They arrived in South Ossetia illegally and were detained while trying to smuggle tobacco products to Georgia, the press service for the KGB of South Ossetia reported.

A criminal case is instituted against Zaza Megrelishvili and Tamaz Gogichashvili on smuggling and illegal crossing of the state border, and the investigation is underway, the KGB of South Ossetia reports on its official website.
