Prosecutor demands 10 years in prison for oppositionist Gumbatov
In Baku, the prosecutor has asked to sentence Agil Gumbatov, an activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) to 10 years in prison. Gumbatov has protested to the state prosecutor and announced the falsification of his criminal case.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 11, Agil Gumbatov, a PFPA member, was detained within the case of stabbing a resident of the dwelling settlement of Zira located near Baku. The defendant himself has rejected his initial testimonies, claiming that he had given them under torture.
On November 11, at the trial at the Baku Grave Crimes Court, the end of the judiciary inquiry was announced, the advocate, Nemat Kerimli, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
"The prosecutor immediately expressed his readiness for the final speech. He asked the court to find Gumbatov guilty of the imputed crime and sentence him to 10 years in prison," said the advocate.
According to Mr Kerimli, the state prosecutor's speech has angered Gumbatov. "My client claimed that a provocation was committed against him. He came to that yard at the call of the person recognized as a victim; and this person had initiated the conflict. Gumbatov said that he did not inflict any injury on the victim, Yamen Mamedov, and that in fact he was punished for criticizing Azerbaijani authorities," the advocate has stated.
