“Musavat” Party activist arrested in Azerbaijan
In Azerbaijan, a court found Rovshan Guseinov, an activist of the “Musavat” Party, guilty of disobeying the police, and sentenced him to 25 days of arrest. Colleagues of Rovshan Guseinov called his arrest the persecution for his active civic position.
Rovshan Guseinov, a member of the Council of the Surakhani District branch of the “Musavat” Party, was detained in the street on October 13.
After that, he was brought to the Division No. 30 of the Surakhani District Police Department, reported Mustafa Gadjibeili, the chief of the press service for the “Musavat” Party. On the same day, Rovshan Guseinov was taken to the Surakhani Court, which found him guilty under Article 535.1 “failure to obey the lawful orders of a police officer” of the Code of Administrative Offenses of Azerbaijan. Rovshan Guseinov was arrested for 25 days. “The activist was not even allowed to invite an advocate of his choice. Today, we will involve in the case a trusted advocate to defend Rovshan Guseinov so that he can appeal against his arrest,” Mustafa Gadjibeili noted.
According to the chief of the “Musavat” Party’s press service, the party members consider the accusation unfounded. “On October 11, the police blocked the way for activists of our party, who were going to the monument to Mamed Emin Rasulzade in the Novkhani village on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the founding of our party. The police motivated their actions by preventing a violation of the mask regime. Meanwhile, there is no ban on being outdoors without masks. After everyone put on masks, the activists in small groups were allowed in. Rovshan Guseinov also protested against the actions of the police. It is clear that the protest provoked his detention and arrest,” Mustafa Gadjibeili suggested.
