PFPA activist Akhmedli arrested for 30 days

Fuad Akhmedli, a member of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), has been sentenced to 30 days of arrest on charges of petty hooliganism. He and five other activists were detained on October 8 near the building of the Baku Court for Grave Crimes, where the verdict was expected to be announced to Niyameddin Akhmedov, another PFPA member.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that this January, Akhmedov was charged with public appeals against the state and illegal circulation of prohibited items. On October 8, the court sentenced him to 13 years in prison.

In the spring of 2020, Akhmedov was arrested for 30 days for violating the quarantine and disobeying the police. His party colleagues said that law enforcers had tortured him forcing him to slander Ali Kerimli, the PFPA leader.

Fuad Akhmedli, a PFPA member, Emin Maniev, a journalist, and four party activists came to watch the trial of Akhmedov. However, they were not only not allowed into the courtroom, but also detained, said Zafar Akhmedov, the father of Fuad Akhmedli, who is a human rights defender and member of the NGO "Defence Line".

According to the father, the four women were taken out of city and released into some desert terrain. Zafar Akhmedov has added that law enforcer used physical force against the activists.

According to Tunzali Amirova, she has recently undergone heart surgery, and she felt bas in the police car. "We don't understand such cruelty towards us. Only one conclusion suggests itself: authorities are afraid of us, people who are fighting for freedom and justice," she has noted.
