Activist Niyameddin Akhmedov sentenced to 13 years in prison

A Baku court has sentenced Niyameddin Akhmedov, an activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) to 13 years in prison. Akhmedov himself has denied all the accusations, treating them as unjustified, and declared the continuation of his hunger strike.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Akhmedov was charged with public appeals against the state and illegal circulation of prohibited items. On September 24, it became known that the activist was hospitalized. His health condition has deteriorated sharply; this is due to his long hunger strike, said Niyameddin's father.

In the spring of 2020, Akhmedov was arrested for 30 days for violating the quarantine and disobeying the police. His fellow party members said that law enforcers had tortured him forcing to slander Ali Kerimli, the PFPA leader. According to the prosecutor's office, Akhmedov received money for terrorist activities from Gabil Mamedov, who was in exile in Germany and "created a secret grouping with the aim of committing terror acts and undermining the public security in Azerbaijan."

In 2020, the Human Rights Union "For Freedom of Azerbaijani Political Prisoners" included Akhmedov into the list of political prisoners.
