Transgender woman attacked in Tbilisi

A car driver hit a transgender woman in Tbilisi and fled the scene. The victim claims that the attack was deliberate; and the police opened an inquiry.

In her social network page, the transgender woman living in Tbilisi has complained that the unidentified car driver had deliberately hit her by his car.

After the road accident, she was hospitalized with multiple traumas. Doctors diagnosed a head injury, in particular. According to an eyewitness, the driver fled, leaving the victim at the accident venue.

The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported that on April 30, 2020, in Tbilisi, a transgender woman set herself on fire in front of the Mayoralty in protest against the growing transphobia she faced during her self-isolation. According to her story, the hostile attitude of the society resulted in her unemployment and absence of means for living.

Earlier, human rights defenders pointed to a growth of aggression against LGBT people in Georgia. With the introduction of restrictions due to coronavirus, LGBT people found themselves in distress; many of them lost their jobs and housing, and became victims of domestic violence, Nino Lomdjariya, the Georgian Ombudsperson, has stated.
