Dagestani activist sues law enforcers after his detention

Eduard Ataev demanded to declare illegal the actions of the law enforcers who kept him at a police station. The rights of the activist were not violated, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Dagestan reported.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on July 8, law enforcers twice brought Eduard Ataev, who was holding a picket in Makhachkala, to a police department. According to the activist, the policemen demanded from him to no longer hold any protest actions.

At a picket on July 8, Eduard Ataev expressed his dissatisfaction with the court’s decisions in cases related to fraud at polling stations in the village of Endirei in September 2020. Besides, on July 5, Eduard Ataev supported Abdulmumin Gadjiev, an arrested journalist of the weekly newspaper “Chernovik” (Rough Draft). Eduard Ataev is a supporter of oppositionist Alexei Navalny. When a Navalny’s office was opened in Makhachkala in April, Eduard Ataev became its coordinator and was sentenced to 10 days of arrest.

The reason for filing the lawsuit is not so much the restriction of freedom of movement in itself, as the demand not to go to pickets, advocate Marat Ismailov emphasizes.
