Human rights defenders demand to punish law enforcers after entering shelter for Taramova

Law enforcers broke into an apartment shelter for victims of domestic violence in Makhachkala in civilian clothes, without presenting any warrants, the human rights group “Marem” claims.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on June 10, Chechen law enforcers took away from Dagestan to Chechnya Khalimat Taramova, a daughter of a Ramzan Kadyrov’s close associate, who was hiding in the shelter for victims of domestic violence. On June 14, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) requested the Russian authorities to submit the information concerning Khalimat Taramova. Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary for the Russian President, stated that the federal authorities did not attribute such cases to their competence. Russia’s Ombudsperson Tatiana Moskalkova has concluded that "the young woman is alive and healthy."

Members of the human rights group “Marem” noted that the law enforcers were dressed in civilian clothes when they broke into the shelter against the will of the people living in it and did not even produce their IDs. Journalist Svetlana Anokhina and volunteers of the “Marem” project were detained. They were accused of rendering resistance to the police, but all the detainees were acquitted by the court. Alyona Popova, a co-founder of the network of mutual assistance for women “You are not alone”, stated that Sergey Melikov, the acting leader of Dagestan, should resign if he failed to ensure the safety of women in the republic.
