In Moscow, court resumes investigation into Chechen Djumaev’s case

In Moscow, a court has refused to pronounce a sentence to Chechen native Said-Mukhammad Djumaev and resumed the investigation to clarify the circumstances of the case, the defence reports.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on May 29, public prosecutor proposed to sentence Said-Mukhammad Djumaev to five years of imprisonment. The pronouncement of the verdict was scheduled for today. Journalists and Djumaev’s support group were not allowed into the courthouse.

Said-Mukhammad Djumaev is accused of having entered into a confrontation with the police at a rally in support of Alexei Navalny held on January 23. Advocates believe there are no grounds for the court to pronounce a sentence of imprisonment against the native of Chechnya.

According to Murad Musaev, an advocate of Said-Mukhammad Djumaev, on July 6, the court will decide whether to continue the investigation into the case. “The reclassification of the charges is likely in question,” Murad Musaev added.

According to the investigators’ version, Said-Mukhammad Djumaev “inflicted multiple blows on law enforcers with his hands and feet,” the “MBKh Media” reports.

On her Instagram page, a female relative of Said-Mukhammad Djumaev called the public prosecutors’ position unfair. The woman expressed her hope for the leniency in the court. “We have the last hope for a fair decision of the judge and for political will of the top-ranking officials, who could give such relief to show our civil society that not all is lost and that the authorities listen to the opinion of young people,” Djumaev’s relative wrote on her Instagram page.

Elizaveta, a mother of Said-Mukhammad Djumaev, has expressed a similar opinion. According to the woman, she hopes “for at least partial justice.”

The public outcry around the Said-Mukhammad Djumaev’s case was caused by the fact that he became the first native of Chechnya in many years to take the side of the opposition.
