Volgograd activists compare situation in the country with Stalinist repressions

On May 1, the activists, Galina Tikhenko, Vladimir Telpuk, Galina Zabolotneva and Vladimir Vasilchenko, came out to central Volgograd with the posters reading "In times of general lies, telling the truth is extremism. G. Orwell", " Freedom to Alexei Navalny!", "Fighting corruption is extremism" and others.

"Today, I demand freedom for Navalny and tell people about the lawlessness applied to the "Meduza", which will affect all independent editions. Navalny is a litmus test for Russia. People who do not advocate for Navalny's freedom are in favour of a new 1937 (1937 is treated as a symbol of Stalinist repressions, – note of the "Caucasian Knot"). Because what they are doing with Navalny is a rehearsal of what they'll do with all the rest of us," the activists explained to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Galina Zablotneva has also recalled Stalinist repressions. "I will say one thing: we were so afraid of the 1990s that ended up in 1937. Repressions are now against everyone. Navalny is the loudest figure today. They attack advocates, defenders, journalists and ordinary citizens who come to rallies with the last hope to change something in this country," she told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
