ICRF’s Department for Chechnya promises state protection to Magamadov and Isaev

Salekh Magamadov and Ismail Isaev, moderators of a Telegram chat, who are under arrest in Chechnya, will receive state protection in connection with the threat of “honour killings.” The state has recognized the reality of the threat to the arrested brothers’ lives, advocate Alexander Nemov emphasizes.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in early February, law enforcers took from Nizhniy Novgorod away to Chechnya two natives of the republic, 20-year-old Salekh Magamadov and his brother Ismail, then a minor. On February 9, in Urus-Martan, in the absence of advocates and parents, a court sent both brothers under arrest for two months. On April 5, in Chechnya, a court extended the brothers’ arrest until May 7. The defence filed an appeal against the court’s decision, and a complaint was also filed about the threat to the life of the arrested brothers in connection with the fact that their relatives were being persuaded to commit “honour killings.”

The Investigating Department for Chechnya of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) will appoint with regard to Ismail Isaev and Salekh Magamadov measures of state protection because of the threat of “honour killings” by their relatives, the “Dozhd” (Rain) TV Channel reports today with reference to Tim Bestsvet, the press secretary for the “Russian LGBT Network”. The information on how exactly it is planned to protect the arrested brothers has not been disclosed yet, the “Dozhd” TV Channel reports on its website.

On April 28, advocate Alexander Nemov received a copy of the resolution issued by the ICRF’s Department for Chechnya, The Insider reports today. “The state has recognized that Magamadov and Isaev face danger,” The Insider quotes advocate Alexander Nemov as saying.
