Attack on Cherkessk prevented in Karachayevo-Cherkessia
In 2006, special agencies of Russia managed to prevent an act of terrorism in Cherkessk (Karachayevo-Cherkessia), comparable by the scale with the attack of militants on Nalchik in 2005, Nikolai Patrushev, Chairman of the National Antiterrorist Centre (NAC) and Director of the FSB of the Russian Federation, told in his interview to the "Rossiyskaya Gazeta."
Mr. Patrushev has reported that within a year the NAC managed to improve the efficiency of fighting terror, first of all, in the Southern Federal District. The head of the FSB has informed that special services have prevented over 300 subversive and terrorist acts in the territory of Dagestan, Ingushetia, Chechnya and Stavropol Territory.
"Among them, there was an armed attack on the bodies of power and managements in the city of Cherkessk, which by its scale could be comparable with the gangster action in Nalchik in October 2005," the "Interfax" quotes Mr. Patrushev.
