In Batumi, forced migrants demand to provide them with apartments

The forced migrants living in the "City of Dreams" dwelling settlement in the capital of Adjara have held a protest action. They fear that they will not get the apartments in the houses now being built, and asked to conclude individual contracts with them.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the construction of three houses for forced migrants was launched in February in the "City of Dreams" dwelling settlement located in Batumi. Local residents are not sure that the houses will be completed, and treat their current housing as unfit for living.

The "City of Dreams" appeared in 2012. It is located in Batumi outskirt, in the territory of the Russian military base that was closed in 2005. It is inhabited by residents of Upper Adjara who suffered from a landslide. Officially, 1500 people live in the settlement, but according to unofficial data – twice as many, the "JAMnews" writes.

On March 22, residents of the "City of Dreams" held a rally near the building of the Ministry of Public Health of Adjara in Batumi, the "Mtavari Arkhi" TV Company reports. They fear that they will not get apartments in the houses under construction, and ask to conclude individual contracts with them, as well as to establish clear criteria by which apartments will be distributed in the houses being built in the location of the former Russian garrison on the seashore.

The protesters tried several times to enter the government building, but policemen stopped these attempts.

Ramaz Djincharadze, Deputy Minister of Public Health of Adjara, came out to meet the protesters. He said that the first phase over 500 families will be resettled, and the second phase of construction will begin this year.
