Azerbaijani oppositionist Akhmedov tells details of torture

Niyameddin Akhmedov, an activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), has described the torture that law enforcers subjected him to during the investigation, trying to knock out testimonies against Ali Kerimli the PFPA leader. The Prosecutor's Office has ignored his complaints about the torture, the advocate has stated.

In the spring of 2020, Niyameddin Akhmedov was arrested for 30 days for violating the quarantine and disobeying police's demands. His party colleagues stated that law enforcers had tortured Akhmedov forcing him to slander Ali Kerimli, the PFPA leader. When the term of his arrest expired, Akhmedov was charged with financing terrorism.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, Akhmedov received money from Gabil Mamedov, who was in emigration in Germany and who "created a secret grouping for committing terror acts in Azerbaijan."

"Niyameddin was beaten with a truncheon on the heels and in the groin; and he fainted from the pain. He was threatened with actions humiliating a man; and he said that it was humiliation for him to slander someone. They did not activate this threat, but Niyameddin was severely tortured," said the PFPA leader.

Zafar Akhmedov, a member of the NGO "Line of Defence", has noted that Niyameddin faces up to 12 years in prison.

In 2020, the human rights union "For Freedom of Political Prisoners of Azerbaijan" included Niyameddin Akhmedov into the list of political prisoners.
