Opposition has failed to unite in Armenia before elections

The overwhelming number of political movements in Armenia are planning their independent, outside any blocks, participation in the elections on May 12 to the National Assembly of Armenia, and some even intend to boycott the elections whatsoever.

Stepan Safaryan, the head for researches of the Armenian Centre for National and Strategic Studies, gave his comments to the correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot" on the current situation in the political playground of Armenia and expressed his regret that the Armenia opposition proved unable to unite and stand above personal ambitions. In his opinion, the absence at the elections of a great opposition block deprives the opposition of any chances to succeed at the elections.

He has noted an elevated attention of the international community to the forthcoming elections in Armenia. In Mr. Safaryan's opinion, the elections to the National Assembly will be used by the international community as an instrument of pressure on the Armenian authorities with the aim to force them into concessions in settling the Karabakh conflict.
