Shootout in Kurchaloi takes place far from residential buildings

A DPS (road-and-patrol service) checkpoint where a shootout has taken place today is located on the outskirts of Kurchaloi, far from residential buildings, a local resident says.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 17, law enforcers shot and killed two persons at a DPS checkpoint in the Kurchaloi District. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), law enforcers stopped a car to check IDs of a driver and passengers, but people in the car threw an improvised explosive device (IED) and opened fire. The policemen were not injured.

The shootout took place on the outskirts of Kurchaloi, says Fatima, a resident of the village. The woman also added that no traffic restrictions were imposed, and no searches or detentions followed the incident.

According to the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot", the shootout in the Kurchaloi District became the fourth incident in Chechnya since the early 2020. On December 16, a similar incident took place in the Achkhoi-Martan District of Chechnya. There, law enforcers conducted a counterterrorist operation (CTO), during which suspected militant Kazbek Baidulaev was killed. Investigators reported that the suspect threw a grenade at the law enforcers after they requested him to surrender and was killed by return fire.
