Azerbaijani journalist Afghan Sadygov transferred to intravenous nutrition

Journalist Afghan Sadygov has been refusing to accept food and water for the 42nd day in a SIZO (pre-trial prison). The SIZO medical staff began to administer intravenous food to Afghan Sadygov. According to physician Aidar Abdullin, intravenous injections of nutrients are applied to critically ill patients.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 3, Afghan Sadygov was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment. On the other day, he declared a hunger strike, and on November 23, the journalist refused to accept even water, his wife said. On December 5, a court refused to transfer Afghan Sadygov under house arrest despite his severe condition.

According to investigators, Afghan Sadygov, the editor-in-chief of the "Azel.tv" portal, was extorting money from officials in Sumgait under the threat of making public some incriminating information. The "Union for the Freedom of Political Prisoners of Azerbaijan" (UFPPA) recognized Afghan Sadygov as a political prisoner.

Warders do not force Afghan Sadygov to accept food, because the journalist threatened them to commit suicide, advocate Elchin Sadygov says.

According to physician Aidar Abdullin, a dry hunger strike for more than three days can cause death. "A person can survive without food for 40 days. If food is not supplied even in the form of intravenous injections, a person will still survive," the physician has added.
