In Tskhinvali, law enforcers unblock streets near protest venue

The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of South Ossetia has lifted the restrictions on the movement in the centre of Tskhinvali, where a protest action continues for the seventh day with the demand to punish the persons responsible for the death of detained Inal Djabiev.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that since December 4, an indefinite protest action organized by relatives of Inal Djabiev has been going on at Theatre Square of Tskhinvali. The protesters demand from the General Prosecutor's Office to hold an effective investigation into the case on the death of Inal Djabiev after his detention by the police. The activists also demand to punish the persons guilty of the detainee's death. During daylight hours, the number of the activists reaches 100, while there are much fewer of them at night, since the militia (police) do not allow setting up tents or making fires and often interfere even with deliveries of hot water.

Inal Djabiev was detained within the case of an attempt on the life of Igor Naniev, the Interior Minister, and died on August 28. Photos of his body with traces of severe beatings appeared on the Internet. Djabiev's death was followed by Igor Naniev's resignation, followed by resignation of the Premier, Eric Pukhaev, and the entire government.

The MIA of South Ossetia has lifted the restrictions on the movement in the centre of Tskhinvali imposed in connection with the protest action. "The city centre has been open for traffic since the yesterday evening. Our employees still stand there and provide law enforcement. The situation in the capital is calm, and there were several people on the square in the morning," the "Sputnik-South Ossetia" quotes the MIA of South Ossetia as reporting.

The protesters are not going to leave the protest venue, one of the activists says. "They (the relatives of Inal Djabiev, – note of the 'Caucasian Knot') are waiting for someone from the authorities to come out to them," said the protester as quoted by the "Sputnik-South Ossetia".
