Canadian city of Laval recognizes independence of Nagorno-Karabakh

The Laval City Council pointed to the right of residents of Nagorno-Karabakh to self-determination and suggested that the Canadian authorities should also recognize the independence of the self-proclaimed republic.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in October, against the background of the hostilities in the Karabakh conflict zone, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan called for prevention of a humanitarian catastrophe in Nagorno-Karabakh by recognizing its independence. Armenia itself has not yet recognized the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan will sever diplomatic relations with those countries that recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh, President Ilham Aliev has threatened. The independence of Nagorno-Karabakh is recognized by some individual municipalities. In October, members of the Italian City Council of Milan and the Public Council of the city of Limone, the Councils of the US cities of Fowler and Fort Lee, and the Councils of the French department of Hauts-de-Seine and the French city of Vienne recognized the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh.

The authorities of the Canadian city of Laval condemned Azerbaijan for the outbreak of the hostilities on September 27 and called on the Canadian government to take action against violations of the international humanitarian law in the Karabakh conflict zone. Moreover, the city of Laval suggested that the Canadian authorities should recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh, the Armenian National Committee of Canada reports on Facebook.

Earlier, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev has said that he considers residents of Nagorno-Karabakh as citizens of Azerbaijan.
