Military experts treat shelling of cities as attempt to provoke panic in Azerbaijan
The shelling of major Azerbaijani cities, Ganja, Mingachevir and other district centres, located far from Nagorno-Karabakh, cannot seriously harm the country's military potential. The shelling is aimed at creating panic among local residents, Baku analysts assert.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 4, the Azerbaijani General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) reported that a missile attack on Ganja, the second largest city in Azerbaijan after Baku in terms of size and population, killed one person and injured 32 others. The Armenian Ministry of Defence announced its non-involvement in the shelling of the city.
The aim of shelling Ganja was to intimidate the local population, said Azad Isazade, a military analyst. In his words, the shelling has to do with the "despair of the Armenian Army."
On October 4, the Armenian MoD reported that Azerbaijani militaries were firing missiles at civilian targets in Stepanakert. Townspeople were forced to hide in house basements.
The expert also believes that missile attacks on Ganja and other cities may pose a threat to passenger aircraft.
The strikes on Ganja were aimed at damaging civilians and civilian infrastructure, Ilham Ismayil, a security expert, is sure.
